Animal owners spend weeks clipping, shaving and dying their pets

Cat and dog owners from all over the world clipped, shaved and dyed their pets for the world's largest grooming competition.

Intergroom is held every year in New Jersey, USA, and over 2,000 pet groomers from 23 different countries attend the annual event to show off their skills.

While dogs were adorned to look like fantasy characters and landscapes, cats were transformed into exotic creations including tigers, lions, wild flowers and birds. Owners spent long hours meticulously shaving their pets' fur to create the shapes they want, and then dying the poor animals so that they resemble eccentric creatures.

“Most of the work is completed before they arrive at the show as they have to be meticulous and spend weeks dying and snipping their cats,” said professional photographer Paul Nathan, who was on the show to take photos for his next book, “Groomed.”

But although owners were probably proud of the result, the pooches and moggies didn't seem very impressed about it. As you can see in the photos, some of the animals are pretty grumpy and don't seem to understand what is going on.

The three-day show also includes a creative-grooming category, where participants can show off their adventurous side. The winner of the contest was Martini, a cat whose fur was adorned with a multi-coloured design.
