The reboot of the classic adventure game now in full 3D on iOS

The adventure game genre has been recently revived by more or less popular developers such as Daedalic Entertainment, Wadjet Eyes and Double Fine, but it’s still a niche genre that requires strong franchises in order to sell well among PC gamers.

Think of that but in reverse when it comes to iOS. The adventure game genre has kind of flourished since developers brought some of the most popular PC titles on Apple’s mobile platform, while others have become smash hits by simply establishing new franchises directly on iOS.

Perils of Man is the result of the collaboration between the newly formed studio IF Games and ex-LucasArts veteran Bill Tiller who has previously worked on highly praised titles such as The Curse of Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.

Announced last summer, the first episode of Perils of Man should have been released in Q4 2013, but for unknown reasons, it will go live in App Store later today. The full game will also be available for download in Q2 2014.

Perils of Man is a classic adventure game that will certainly bring back pleasant memories to those who love the genre. We’ve been offered the chance to play the first episode of the game before it actually goes on sale and we loved it.

The game starts with a 5-minute or so introduction where players are offered a short background on the story behind Perils of Man. You get bombarded with all sort of information that apparently don’t seem related and it’s up to you to discover the entire plot.

The main protagonist of Perils of Man is Ana Eberling, daughter of a disappeared father who happens to be a genius scientist. In fact, Ana’s entire family seems to have been cursed with disappearances or tragic deaths among the men of the house over the course of a few centuries.

It’s up to you to discover the truth behind your father’s sudden disappearance. You start in the family house where you now live alongside your mother, who seems a bit eccentric, to say the least.

The controls are intuitive enough, as you only need to touch the screen to tell Ana where to move. Holding your finger on the display will reveal the hotspots that you can interact with. The inventory is very well designed and provides players with multiple options, such as the possibility to combine two items.

In order to use an item stored in the inventory with a hotspot in the environment, you will need to open the Inventory and drag and drop it over the location you want to interact with. The transition between various environments is pretty smooth, though I have noticed occasional hiccups, but nothing to worry about.

The game also includes a help system that’s been placed in the Inventory. It offers players hints on what they must accomplish to further advance into the game. Keep in mind that the help system only offers advice based on the location you’re in at that moment.

Perils of Man is tinted with mildly complex puzzles, but the game really shines when it comes to the variations of these puzzles. You will have to solve math problems and puzzles than involve more objects that need to be combined.

The graphics are a bit on the cartoonish side, which I really liked. Sound and visuals are aspects that heavily contribute to gameplay immersion especially in an adventure game. I can confirm that The Perils of Man is spot-on when it comes to these aspects and their contribution to the immersion.

I’ve been immersed into Perils of Man for around 3 hours and I was pleasantly surprised that the story of the game covers more than 100 years (150 developers say). How is that possible? Well, you will be able to travel in time and alter the fate of others thanks to a machine belonging to one of your ancestors.

The story behind Perils of Man is really engaging, full of mystery and intrigue, which will definitely entertain players for lots of hours.

The Perils of Man is a title that adventure game fans would definitely not want to miss. Personally, I can’t wait to grab the entire game when it gets released later in Q2.

You can now download Perils of Man: Chapter 1 via App Store.
