Come Sunday, September 21, Manhattan will be the scene of what is expected to be the largest climate change march in history.

Thus, on said date, tens of thousands of people are expected to rally in this borough in New York City, US, looking to push for a better tomorrow.

These people all have one thing in common: they are very much worried about climate change and global warming, and want high officials to pass legislation intended to limit the use of fossil fuels and promote green energy.

They also want better protection for Earth's natural ecosystems.

Why September 21 and not some other day?

As detailed on the official website for this event, the over 1,000 groups in charge of organizing the march settled on September 21 instead of some other date due to the fact that, come September 23, a United Nations meeting is scheduled to take place in New York City.

The world leaders attending this meeting are expected to discuss the threats that global warming and climate change pose to our planet, and try to come up with solutions to these problems.

Thus, the September 21 march is no more and no less than a means to pressure high officials at the UN meeting into taking action against pollution and promoting sustainability.

“We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.”

“The march is already demonstrating that climate change, once seen as a divisive issue, is becoming a unifying political concern across labor, environment, faith and justice groups,” the event's organizers explain the importance of this historical rally.

The approved route for the march

The route of this climate change march was approved by authorities in New York City earlier this year, on August 15. Should things go according to plan, the march will begin at 11:30 a.m.. Its starting point will be Central Park West, between 65th and 86th streets.

The folks attending the event will walk along several streets in Manhattan, and will stop when reaching 11th Avenue, in the streets between 34th Street and 38th Street. The march will take them past several of New York City's landmarks, among which the Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

To get a better idea of the planned route, check out the image below. Still, keep in mind that changes might occur at the last minute, and that the crowd might find itself forced to take another route.

As explained by the organizers, “This march route was set after several months of negotiating with the New York Police Department – it may slightly vary from information you received via e-mail.”

Who can attend this rally?

The best part about the upcoming People's Climate March in New York City, US, is that everybody can take part in it. In fact, those wishing to attend the rally need only visit PeoplesClimate.Org and sign up.

Dozens other such events will take place on September 21 in several regions across the world, so those who don't live in this country can too put some pressure on the world leaders expected to attend the UN meeting.

“The People’s Climate March won’t only be the largest, but also the most diverse global day of action on climate change–from unions to immigrants to parents to students to communities of faith,” explains Eddie Bautista with the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance

“Our message to anyone anywhere concerned about the way the climate crisis will impact our jobs, health, children and communities is simple: join us,” the environmentalist goes on to say.
