Though considerably younger than the long-established fashion icons that usually steal the show whenever they set foot on the red carpet, it was Underwood, Alba and Swift’s night at this year’s issue of People’s Choice Awards. Dressed in monochrome outfits, these three young stars proved that, as far as style and class are concerned, they can’t be bought with money.

This being a popularity awards ceremony, the fashion at People’s Choice Awards is rarely as “uptight” as is the case with, say, the Oscars or the preceding ceremony, the Golden Globes. This should have been translated into more color on the red carpet and certainly more boldness as regards cuts and designs, it is being said. In the case of these three stars, chic was the key word as they managed to look positively astounding without even coming across as trying too much.

Country singer Carrie Underwood, for instance, the ultimate blonde beauty, opted for a black and white Christian Cota strapless gown. The dress was layered (white underneath and a see-through black layer over it) and matched with black gladiator-inspired pumps and a black, delicate clutch. Large diamond earrings and a very loose ‘do came to contrast with the eye makeup, with the singer opting for the smoky eyes effect.

Pop darling Taylor Swift opted for white. She arrived on the red carpet in a Tory Burch trench, which, when removed, revealed a Jenny Packham strapless short dress, punctuated here and there with bright crystals. She also wore Neil Lane earrings and bracelet, Christian Louboutin silver pumps and a Swarovski clutch. All this could have been a rather plain getup, some say, but the acclaimed singer wore it with such delicacy and grace that it eventually turned out to be one of the most fabulous outfits of the night.

Jessica Alba, on the other hand, opted for a more futuristic creation, though it too was monochrome. Decked in sparkly and short Antonio Berardi gown that added volume to the hips while also putting emphasis on her cleavage, the “Fantastic Four” star looked positively glamorous. She matched the fabulous dress with a pair of knotted pumps with straps that looked as if made of rope, and which made her toned and tanned pins literally stand out.
