The state might be experiencing a historic drought but this doesn't mean folks can stand to have brown lawns

On April 1, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced California's first ever mandatory water restrictions, implemented in an attempt to help this US state cope with the severe drought plaguing it.

The restrictions brought forth by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. said that cities and towns across California must cut their use of water by at least 25%.

The thing is that, as it turns out, folks in California can't bear to look at their lawns turning brown under the scorching sun. Drought or no drought, backyards must be pleasing to the eye, they seem to think.

Lawns can still look great during times of drought

Since they can't water their backyards, people in California were forced to come up with some other way to keep their home cities and towns nice and green.

As weird as this may sound, word has it that the solution they found was to start painting local grass green. That's right, people in California are spraying green paint over local lawns, hoping to make them look fresh and vigorous.

Oddity Central tells us that, although not exactly new, this service was once limited to golf courses and athletic fields. These days, however, it's oddly popular.

Wedding planners, hoteliers and even regular home owners in California are having grass experts come over and spray paint their yards to make them look as if the state's historic drought never happened.

The grass is sprayed with a special paint designed to withstand the test of time and that does not pose a threat to people and their pets. From afar, the painted grass looks just like any other patch of greenery.

“It looks phenomenal,” Jeff Griffith-Jones, general manager of operations at Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose, explained in an interview.

“The important thing is we’re saving water and that’s what our members are looking for, so that’s what’s important to us. The members love it so much,” he added.

Apparently, painting grass is lucrative business

45-year-old Jim Power, owner of grass painting company LawnLift, is the first to admit that, at least these days, coloring people's yards is lucrative business in California.

When he first set up his company, he didn't expect to be this successful. Instead, he thought he would only get to work with real estate agents looking to impress people when taking them to visit one property or another.

Courtesy of the severe drought that California is now going through, however, business is booming as regular guys and gals have taken a sudden interest in his company's services.
