The city's mayor decides to close the beach, hopes to offer the animals some protection

A beach in San Diego is now closed to the general public, all thanks to some people's habit of coming to this beach and abusing both mother seals and their cubs.

By the looks of it, several such instances of animal abuse were caught on camera, which was why Mayor Bob Filner decided to take matters into his own hands and no longer allow people to visit the beach between sunset and sunrise.

“I felt it was important to take this step after evidence of individuals seen on video tape, harassing, taunting and causing stress to the seals at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla. The behavior was shocking, reprehensible and certainly not a reflection of how most citizens in our fine city believe animals should be treated,” reads a statement issued by San Diego's mayor.

Ironically enough, the camera that captured the footage showing people kicking seals and throwing sand in their eyes was actually set up in order to allow conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts to better monitor these animals.

According to Daily Mail, it was not very long ago when two women were filmed while kicking and abusing several pregnant seals.
