A darker Requiem

Paradox Interactive, as publisher, and Frictional Games, as developer, have announced that this summer the expansion for Penumbra: Black Plague would be on PC. Given the way the story in the game seems to have been planned by Frictional Games, this could be the third one in the series and it could wrap up the story.

Penumbra is a classic adventure game with elements of survival horror and a bit of shooting thrown in for good measure. Most of the gameplay is based on exploration and the player must try and avoid enemy encounters altogether rather than fight his enemies. There are some pretty tough puzzles scattered throughout the game, but there are also clues regarding how they should be solved.

The story of Penumbra is a cross between classic John Carpenter The Thing and some H.P. Lovecraft. In the Arctic, a secret society tries to uncover some ancient secrets that would grant them immense power and the ability to somehow rule the world. The main character, called Phillip, is trapped within their research and digging facility and he must find out what they're looking for, why their looking for it and how he can escape, all while dodging some surprisingly fast zombies (well not really zombie but zombie like creatures) called the Infected. As the story progresses an ancient spirit makes and appearance and Phillip shows what free will is really all about. And that's all I can say without giving away much of the game.

Talking about the expansion Jens Nilsson, who is the boss of Frictional Games, stated that "After the launch of Penumbra: Black Plague we realised that we still had some unfinished ideas for features and storyline that we wanted to implement. An expansion like this will be the perfect end to a series that has given both us and the players so much".

It makes sense for this expansion to be released as Frictional have always stated that the original concept they had for Penumbra was of a trilogy, with development resources constraining them to do only two games rather than three.
