Since rugged, weatherproof digital cameras are always popular with people leading a more adventurous lifestyle, Pentax has just released two new such products in its Optio lineup, namely the WG-1 and WG-1 GPS models, that will really be able to take a beating, while in the same time producing good quality photos and videos.

First and foremost, it's important to point out that the new cameras (that are only differentiated by the presence of a GPS module for geo-tagging in the case of the WG-1 GPS) are waterproof to 33 feet and provide a shockproof, ruggedized design to withstand falls up to 5 feet and also supporting weight force up to 220 pounds (100kgf kilogram-force).

Moreover, they're also coldproof to sub-freezing temps of minus 10 degrees C (14 degrees F), as well as dustproof.

The compact digital cameras come equipped with 14 megapixel sensors and a wide angle 5X internal optical zoom lens (28-140mm equivalent), as well as a large 2.7 inch LCD with 16:9 aspect ratio and anti-reflective coating, so that users will be able to easily review photos and videos in just about any lighting conditions.

Beside being able to capture photos, the rugged cameras also offer video capture in 720p HD at 30 frames per second, while the built-in autofocus assist lamp helps to quickly and accurately focus and the HDMI port enables the playback of images and videos on HDTVs.

The two cameras also offer infrared remote control compatibility and include a woven web fabric strap complete with a carabiner to attach the camera to a backpack and other outdoor gear.

The Optio WG-1 will be available in Black or Purple for $349.95 USD while the Optio WG-1 GPS will be priced at $399.95 USD and available in Black or Yellow Green, both cameras being slated to hit the shelves over the course of April 2011.
