A giant symbol shaped like a pentagram is puzzling the scientific world. The marking can be spotted on Google Earth in Kazakhstan, and a photo of it has been posted above this news blog.

The Telegraph documents that the pentagram is located 12 miles (19.31 km) from the town of Lisakovsk, on the shore of the Upper Tobol reservoir, and measures about 1,200 feet (366 meters).

Archaeologist Emma Usmanova tells NBC News that the pentagram could represent an amusement park dating back to the Soviet era, during which the star symbolized the Soviet Union.

"It is the outline of a park made in the form of a star," Usmanova says. She says that the inner lines of the marking represent alleys lines with trees.

Others claim that the fact that the sign is placed near the Baikonur Cosmodrome suggests that it is an old missile testing site.
