It’s well known that one of the US government’s top concerns is protecting the nation’s critical infrastructures against cyberattacks and developing the capabilities needed for offensive and defensive operations in cyberspace.

How much money does the Pentagon need to achieve its goals? According to Bloomberg, it needs almost $23 billion (€17 billion) through 2018.

More precisely, the US Department of Defense wants $4.65 billion (€3.5 billion) for the fiscal year that starts on October 1. This amount represents an 18% increase compared to this year’s cybersecurity budget.

The budget document obtained by Bloomberg shows that the Pentagon wants even more money for 2015, $4.72 billion (€3.55 billion) to be precise.

The amount requested for 2016 and 2017 declines a bit, but for 2018 it increases again to $4.53 billion (€3.41 billion).

The document also shows that $9.3 billion (€7 billion) through 2018 are needed for systems that would prevent hackers from disrupting Pentagon computer systems, and $8.9 billion (€6.7 billion) for cyber operations – both defensive and offensive ones.
