PelicanHPC GNU/Linux reached today version 2.0, as announced last evening (January 12th) by Michael Creel, on the distribution's website. Based on the Debian Squeeze testing branch, PelicanHPC 2.0 updates a few core packages, and introduces some improvements and various bug fixes. PelicanHPC is a Live CD Linux distribution based on the Debian mammoth, which aims to simplify the setup of a high-performance computing cluster. Without further introduction, here are the changes since the last development version of PelicanHPC:

· Based on Debian Squeeze (testing); · Linux kernel 2.6.30; · Open MPI 1.3.3 (as the default and only MPI implementation); · Installed Ganglia, a system monitoring utility (configure for four hosts); · Added GNU Octave MPI bindings, which allow the use of Octave 3.2.x branches instead of the Octave 3.0.x ones. Also, the kernel examples and Monte Carlo were adapted for these new MPI bindings.

Below, we've listed some of the most important features of PelicanHPC 2.0, including some default applications:

· Based on Debian Squeeze Linux; · Created using Debian Live; · XFCE4 desktop environment; · Konqueror web browser and file manager; · KSysguard and Ganglia cluster monitoring tools; · Kate graphical text editor; · nano command-line text editor; · Includes the Open MPI and LAM-MPI implementations of MPI (32-bit and 64-bit); · Includes extensive example applications using MPITB and GNU Octave; · Includes the Linpack HPL benchmark; · Any Class C network can be used (default cluster is on 10.11.12.*).

About PelicanHPC

PelicanHPC is a Debian-based Live CD Linux distribution that lets everyone easily set up a high-performance computing cluster in a few minutes. The resulting Pelican cluster will allow you to do parallel computing with the help of MPI. While the frontend node boots directly from the CD image, the compute nodes will boot by PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) utilizing the frontend node as the server. The ISO image of PelicanHPC Linux is created using the Debian Live infrastructure.
