When it comes to extreme weather manifestations, most people manage to keep themselves safe and more often than not also make sure that their pets are kept out of harm's way.

However, wild animals are left to look after themselves, and this usually leads to their suffering serious injuries.

The pelican in this picture was tossed and turned through the air by hurricane Sandy for several hours, which is why, once it landed on the streets of Norfolk, it displayed all the usual signs of exhaustion.

Luckily for him, a person who witnessed its struggle to face the storm called in green-oriented group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), and the latter succeeded in capturing the bird and taking it to a nearby Virginia Beach SPCA unit.

The pelican is to remain there until outside weather conditions improve.
