The watch could see the light of day on February 24

After an avalanche of smartwatch launches in 2014, the hype around these wearables is apparently slowly fading out.

Sure LG has just introduced the LG Watch Urbane which looks quite gorgeous given that it’s fully made of metal, and HTC is probably going to unveil its first intelligent timepiece at MWC 2015, but the obsession with wearables doesn't seem to be as persistent as it was last year.

However, the giants (if we can call them that) of the smartwatch business won’t go away so fast. Pebble, for example, doesn't seem too intimidated by the latest smartwatch roll-outs, including Apple’s overly due on the market product.

Pebble might be small compared to the giants of the tech industry, but it’s not willing to succumb without a fair fight.

Pebble is cooking up something

Now a mysterious countdown timer has popped up on the smartwatch maker’s website. At the time of the writing this article, there are 4 days 5 hours and 18 minutes to go before something exciting (we can only guess) happens.

So what can we expect to see? According to a 9to5Mac which talked to sources familiar with the matter, Pebble is supposed to introduce a new model with a bigger screen and a color display of the E-Ink variety.

The watch is also expected to be thinner, but sadly battery life will remain the same. Other novelties will consist in a new OS and a microphone, an aspect that is supposedly tied to some sort of next-gen apps, but we’re not sure exactly what they will be entailing.

The report goes on to mentions that Pebble enthusiasts shouldn't expect to see a touchscreen display on this new model, which is sort of a letdown.

Back in August, we brought you news of a leaked image which supposedly showed the next-gen Pebble watch with a color display.

We hypothesized that the watch would take advantage of a technology similar to Qualcomm’s Toq watch, which bundles a color E-Ink display (the so-called Mirasol display tech).

Since then, the purported Pebble smartwatch has never been mentioned again, but now we might end up seeing it go live in a just a few days.
