The store will go online early next year, 2014, filled with free downloads

Pebble may be one of the oldest and best received smartwatches, but it has one serious limitation: lack of specialized apps. Fortunately, the Pebble team is working on a special App store.

If the Pebble had been designed with an Android operating system, it could have used Android apps from the Google Play store.

Or, at least, software makers would have had a familiar platform to design their apps on. The same goes for iOS (from Apple).

As it is, though, Pebble runs its own OS, which means that the only apps available for it are those that the Pebble team made themselves.

This won't be the case for too long though. Having released the Pebble software development kit 2.0 back in early fall, the company expects independent software devs to make some small programs. This is why Pebble is preparing an app store: to house them all.

The Pebble app store will go live early next year and will only contain free downloads. Paid apps may appear at some point in the future, but no charge will be allowed for now.
