David Tavares, father of the Pear Linux project, has just announced that he started a crowdfunding campaign for a new project, called Pear OS 8 Tablet Edition, a version of the Pear OS 8 Linux operating system for the Microsoft Surface tablet.

As described on its Indiegogo page, Pear OS 8 Tablet Edition will be, if it reaches the €10,500 ($14,000) goal, an operating system based on the beautiful Pear OS 8 Linux distribution, but specially engineered for the Microsoft Surface tablet.

I have to admit that the €10,500 ($14,000) goal is a bold move from David Tavares, who promises to create two versions of the mobile operating system based on Pear Linux: Pear OS 8 Tablet Edition RT (ARM) and Pear OS 8 Pro Tablet Edition (x64).

To be honest, I don't know how many people will buy a (very expensive) Microsoft Surface tablet to dump Windows 8 and install Pear OS 8, but the good news is that the ARM version of Pear OS 8 Tablet Edition will be fully compatible with the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung Galaxy Note, Google Nexus 7 and 10 tablets.
