PayPal is already thinking about how people will pay for things in space

PayPal isn't satisfied with dominating online payments, it wants to control the world's "offline" payments as well. In fact, it's not even satisfied with that.

The company wants to control payments on other planets as well, even though there's no one – no one human, at least – to make those payments on these other planets, for now.

To make its dreams come true, the company is introducing PayPal Galactic, for your outer-space payment processing needs.

PayPal partnered with the SETI Institute, which is still searching for the pesky aliens who keep hiding from us, and former astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

Granted, the project is focused on exploring ideas of how payments and money would work in space, and there's no space dollar being proposed just yet. Still, PayPal has big hopes.

"Trips to Mars, the moon — even orbit — will require we provide astronauts and astro-tourists with as many comforts from home as possible, including how to pay each other," Buzz Aldrin said in a statement.

"Whether it's paying a bill, even helping a family member on Earth, we'll need access to money. I think humans will reach Mars, and I would like to see it happen in my lifetime. When that happens, I won't be surprised if people use PayPal Galactic for the little things and the big ones," he added.

PayPal will be making a more detailed announcement later. For now, the official site isn't even working.
