Just yesterday, those choosing to access Greenpeace's official website must have been pleasantly surprised to see that Sir Paul McCartney also joined their 'Save the Arctic' campaign.

Moreover, the celebrity agreed to write a blog speaking about how, in just 40 years or so, humanity has managed to negatively impact on the ecosystems in this part of the world much more than the planet's entire evolution over the past 800,000 years has affected them.

To get his ideas across and to help raise awareness with respect to this pressing issue, Paul McCartney wishes to remind people that, back in 1968, when astronauts William Anders and Frank Borman took a picture of the earth from outer space, the Arctic region was no more and no less than an over-sized sheet of ice.

However, as the celebrity points out, that picture is no longer an accurate one, as human activities have caused a considerable amount of said ice to melt, thus changing the way in which our planet looks like when seen from afar.

Paul McCartney's blog, which can be read in its entirety on Greenpeace's website, also argues loud and clear that “By digging up fossil fuels and burning our ancient forests we've put so much carbon into the atmosphere that today's astronauts are looking at a different planet.”

Moreover, “As the ice retreats, the oil giants are moving in. […] They're exploiting the disappearance of the ice to drill for the very same fuel that caused the melting in the first place.”

Together with Greenpeace, the ex-Beatles asks people to join the “Save the Arctic” campaign and demand that a legal sanctuary is created around the North Pole.

As he explains it, one can choose to be a polar bear, a snowy owl, an Arctic fox, a walrus or a narwhal, and then hunt together with members of one's animal clan for new supporters.

As far as Paul McCartney's new Arctic identity is concerned, it seems that the celebrity has chosen to be a walrus.
