Patriot Memory has just announced that it has updated its product portfolio to feature new Torqx 2 series solid state drives that offer improved performances over their predecessors as well as larger storage capacities.

The new Patriot SSD drives are a serious revamp of the older models as they can now reach sequential write speeds of up to 230MB/s while the sustained read performance is rated at 270MB/s.

To put things in perspective, the first generation Torqx SSDs has a similar read performance (260MB/s), but their write speeds were limited at 115MB/s, which is exactly half the write throughput of the Torqx 2.

Mush like its predecessors, the second-generation Torqx solid state drives use the same SATA II 3.0 Gbps interface, but their controller has been updated to offer the performance boost advertised.

Sadly, we don't know who has manufactured it, but Patriot states that the drive comes with old-school 3x-nm NAND flash memory.

The SSD controller used in the original Torqx was built by Indilinx as the “Barefoot” IDX110 model.

Just as most other solid state disks that sell at this time, the Patriot Torqx 2 supports the TRIM technology.

“We recognize there are a lot of users with desktops and notebooks that want the SSD performance experience but lack SATA III 6.0 Gbps compatibility to fully take advantage of our higher-end drives,” says Meng Jay Choo, Patriot Memory's Flash Memory Product Manager.

“With the new Patriot Torqx 2 series, we are able to deliver a significant performance boost at attractive prices,” concluded the company's rep.

The Patriot Torqx 2 should start shipping this week in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities with a 2.5-inch form factor. No details regarding the prices of the drives were made public by Patriot.
