14 DAY TRIAL // Earlier this week, Barry University started notifying patients of the Foot and Ankle Institute that their personal information, including medical records, might have been compromised by cybercriminals.
According to The Miami Herald, the university detected a piece of malware on a school laptop on May 14. Shortly after the breach was discovered, an outside firm was called in to clean up the malware infection.
Now, Barry University has determined that the names, dates of birth, social security numbers, bank account numbers, payment card numbers, medical record numbers, driver’s license numbers, health insurance details and other health-related information might have been compromised.
The organization’s representatives say the malware is complex and they can’t accurately determine if it has managed to exfiltrate patient information. However, as a precaution, impacted individuals are being contacted and offered one year of credit monitoring services.
The number of impacted people has not been disclosed. So far, there aren't any reports of identity theft or fraudulent transactions.
