A passenger having to land a plane after the pilot fell unconscious has become a hero online. The man was training with the pilot when the latter fell ill, and died in the hospital the same day.

The man left alone on the plane and tasked to fly it without any previous experience is 77 years old, the National Post reports.

John Wildey was on his way to Doncaster, South Yorkshire, before landing at Humberside Airport.

Wildey is a former RAF employee and has never flown before. The hardest thing, he says, has been “flying blind” in the dark.

“It was dark by that time and I couldn’t turn on the dashboard lights. [...] It was a bit worrying because I didn’t know if the plane was level,” he recalls.
