Yahoo! has announced that the Yahoo! Network, including Yahoo!'s Homepage, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance and Yahoo! Sports, has delivered 100 million visits to affiliate newspapers. As most of you must already know, Yahoo!'s properties display news provided by several news agencies and 779 newspapers from all over the U.S.
Although Yahoo!'s partners are hand-picked, so they don't usually run short of readers, the stories that the Sunnyvale company chooses for its front page bring lots of visitors, thanks to the linking system that enables users to go directly to the source of the articles. "It's like a firehose blasting us with up to 800,000 page views in just a couple of hours. We've had placements that have accounted for up to 27 percent of the day's page views, and 65 percent of the day's unique visitors." says Anthony Moor, Deputy Managing Editor, Interactive, The Dallas Morning News, and editor of dallasnews.com.
While Yahoo! receives interesting content for its users, the partner media outlets benefit from the popularity of the Internet company. According to a comScore report, 78% of the American Internet users are part of the Yahoo! community, whether they are using the email service, the instant messaging or just reading the latest headlines. Speaking of headlines, they are also displayed in the non-news applications of Yahoo!, such as the two previously named.
"Placing Newspaper Consortium headlines on Yahoo! has given our users access to some of the nation's highest-quality reporting, and made our sites more relevant than ever," states Scott Moore, Senior Vice President and head of Media, Yahoo!. "Whether we're providing story headlines about a locally headquartered company on Yahoo! Finance or news about our users' hometown teams on Yahoo! Sports, the ability to link to a national network of newspapers gives our audience a more valuable local perspective." The "all news are local" saying seems to serve the company well, especially if we're to take into account the number of people who rely on Yahoo!'s news system.
