Particle physicist Brian Cox wants to take iPhone and iPad owners on a journey to the stars to unravel the wonders of the universe with a new application that offers a “mind-blowing 3D tour of the Universe,” with the professor himself as your guide.

Professor Brian Edward Cox is an English particle physicist, a Royal Society University Research Fellow and a professor at the University of Manchester.

Best known to the public as the presenter on BBC’s science programmes, Cox was also the keyboard player for the pop band D:Ream in the 1990s.

Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe lets you “journey up from the smallest particles, past the moons and planets of the Solar System, out through the Oort Cloud to the Milky Way, past our Local Stars and out to distant galaxies before arriving, finally, at the edge of the known Universe.”

“On the way you will encounter the likes of seething Red Giants, beautiful Nebulae, pulsing Neutron stars and confront a daunting vision of a Black Hole sucking down a hapless star, all rendered in spectacular 3D,” says Professor Cox.

Sort of like the Carl Sagan of our time, Brian Cox wanted to get this app out so that everyone could explore the Universe in 7 interlinked scales from sub-atomic to the edge of the known Cosmos.

The app contains no less than two-and-a-half hours of BBC video from the Wonders TV series (which requires WiFi to stream), as well as over 50 spectacular 3D models of planets, moons, galaxies and nebulae.

Users will also gain access to over 200 interactive articles by the professor in which he tells the story of the Universe like no other presenter today.

Needless to mention, Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe is chock full of stunning images from around the cosmos, and the graphics has been optimized for the new iPad’s Retina display.

Priced at $6.99 (5.49 EUR), Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe is compatible with iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G. It requires iOS 5.0 or later to run.
