Parted Magic 6.1 has been released. The latest update to the live Linux distro useful for disk partitioning adds an updated kernel and plenty of updated packages. The latest security update to the Mozilla Firefox web browser is also included.

The big new update in Parted Magic 6.1 is the addition of the very latest X.Org, along with all the related drivers and libraries.

Parted Magic 6.1 also marks the move to the open-source Nvidia driver, Nouveau, which is enabled by default, replacing the older, 2D-only, legacy driver.

"This version of Parted Magic includes a new Xorg build and some bug fixes. The Nouveau Xorg driver for nvidia chips is used by default now," Patrick Verner announced.

"The black screen problem with the Intel Mobile 4 Series Integrated Graphics Controllers has been fixed. A mess of other minor issues were addressed," he explained.

Parted Magic 6.1 is the first update to the new 6.x branch. Parted Magic got a major update with the previous release, explaining the bump in major version number.
