Named after the Latin term for Anatolian Leopard, Pardus is an open source Linux distribution developed in Turkey, as a product of the Pardus Project. Today, the Pardus team proudly announces the release of the Pardus 2007.2 Caracal caracal version.

According to the release announcement Pardus is now available in no less than 10 languages such as: French, Italian, Catalan, Turkish, English, Spanish,
German, Dutch and Brazilian Portugues. Among the translations, Pardus 2007.2 also comes with major changes and improvements. For example, the pisi package manager provides now a faster and more secure packages search due to its new search method for package names and descriptions.

Also the Pardus 2007.2 repository has many new software counting exactly 1728 tested and stable packages. The Pardus users can download other more than 650 packages by adding contrib repository to the package manager.

Highlights:

- updated KDE 3.5.7 for better stability
- PEAP-MSCHAPv2 support for Network Manager
- new boot manager which can add, modify or delete GRUB entries seen during the boot process
- autologin support in YALI (Yet Another Linux Installer)
- Jmicron support has been added
- improved package management system
- more packages updates

According to the Pardus Team, their distribution requirements are those of an average hardware configuration. According to them, a 512 MB RAM (memory) and 1200 MHz processor would get an effective performance, but a minimum configuration of 256 MB memory and 800 MHz Intel or AMD processor plus at least 4 GB of free hard disk space is enough.

Pardus is an operating system focusing on ease-of-use with many enhancements for desktop usability, compatibility and security. The barely released Pardus 2007.2 version allows the users to connect to the Internet and do specific activities such as read email, surf the web or communicate with others. The OS deals very well with the machine's multimedia capabilities and things such as listening to music or watching movies can be done very easily.
