Undoubtedly, last year’s underdog at the box office was “Paranormal Activity,” a little film that had made the festival circuit and exploded into the biggest horror sensations of recent years, while also making a killing at ticket sales.

Paramount Pictures picked up the sequel for it as well, which should arrive in US theaters soon. In the meantime, fans in Japan will get their very own sequel, especially made for the market here, called “Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night.”

This is not something that movie studios would do, it has been pointed out, so it should speak volumes for just how successful the original film turned out to be with the Japanese public.

ScreenDaily says this sequel will pick up the events from where the original film left off, focusing on the story of a girl who returns home in Japan after a visit to the US.

She also brings back an unexpected and not quite pleasant companion, the e-zine further says.

“The project is a direct continuation of the events of Oren Peli and Jason Blum’s 2007 original and takes place in Japan as a girl who visited San Diego as an exchange student unwittingly brings the evil that haunted Katie Featherston into her family’s house,” ScreenDaily writes.

Just like the original film, the sequel will also see the girl who is now haunted try and document her experiences on tape, as she and her family struggle to defeat the entity she brought back with her.

“Toshikazu Nagae is directing the project from his own screenplay and Aoi Nakamura and Noriko Aoyama star. Yasutaka Hanada is producing,” the same publication notes.

As of now, the Japanese-language-only sequel is scheduled for a tentative release in December this year but the date may be liable to change.

However, the people behind this unique project are certain it will be a hit, as Presidio CEO and the film’s producer Yasutaka Hanada says.

“Paranormal Activity was a huge success with Japanese audiences and we feel confident that our own Japanese continuation of the franchise can find an enthusiastic genre audience both here and overseas,” Hanada explains.

“We have a very strong relationship with Stuart Ford and his IM Global team and are looking forward to them using their high profile to bring the film to the broadest possible audience,” the producer adds.
