Threequel / prequel is out on October 21, promises to solve the mystery of the haunting

In a context in which horror movie fans thought they’d seen it all in terms of scare tactics, a tiny budget movie with two actors and a small crew proved they were still a long way from knowing it all. The third “Paranormal Activity” will come out this October – and the official poster is here.

The original 2007 film turned out to be such a hit with fans and critics that a sequel was released. “PA 2” did not manage to top its predecessor, but still surprised by being very original and, in many ways, the exact opposite of a Hollywood sequel.

A threequel was announced shortly after the release of the second film, taking the story of the terrible haunting even further back in time – back to where it all started, in the two girls’ childhood.

The first trailer for “Paranormal Activity 3” premiered earlier this year at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego and was received most warmly by fans, who were thus convinced that this would be yet another solid horror movie.

The poster strengthens this belief, CinemaBlend points out.

It shows the two girls, sisters Katie and Kristi, sleeping in their separate beds in their parents’ home. As fans must know, the story is set in late ‘80s and will document the events that will mark the beginning of the haunting.

That is even apparent in the poster, which shows a shadow on the wall between the two beds: it must definitely be the ghost-demon-type of presence that’s been responsible for the tragedies in the first two films.

“Discover how the activity began. It runs in the family,” reads the poster.

In other words, it confirms that “PA 3” will most likely be an origin story, which could also mean that a fourth film will not be made or, at least, not with the same characters.

“Paranormal Activity 3” will be out in theaters on October 21. Those who haven’t seen the previous two films still have time to do so by then. Those who did, check out the trailer for the third below.
