This past August 23, a female giant panda living in captivity at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC delivered a perfectly healthy and incredibly tiny cub.

By the looks of it, this is the third time Mei Xiang becomes a mother. Hence the fact that she appears to be doing a great job looking after her little bundle of joy.

Sources say that, presently, zoo keepers are unable to say whether the panda cub is a boy or a girl. What's more, they aren't even sure who the baby panda's father is.

This is because Mei Xiang became pregnant via artificial insemination.

When carrying out this medical procedure, veterinarians used male gametes collected from two different male pandas, Tian Tian and Gao Gao.

The baby panda and its mother are to be closely monitored over the following weeks. Should anything appear off, keepers are ready to rush the cub to an incubator.
