Everyone seems to be hopping onto the SDHC bandwagon these days, as the most important names in the industry keep rolling out all sorts of "world's firsts", whether we're talking about storage space or transfer speeds. And one of the latest such announcements comes from none other than Panasonic, who has just announced the imminent release (well, don't get your hopes high just yet, they're talking about April 2008) of the industry's first 32 GB Secure Digital High Capacity card to provide transfer rates of up to 20 MB/s (Class 6 speed).

According to the company's own statement, the 32 GB of storage capacity represent a very good solution for AVCHD High Definition video recording, which is becoming increasingly popular due to the expansion of High Definition SD Camcorders. Actually, the company's testing reveals that, when used with Panasonic's HDC-SD9 camera, the card provides enough room for around 12 hours of 1440 x 1080i High Definition video in HE mode, and approximately four hours of 1920 x 1080i full High Definition video in HA mode, as well as up to 12320 digital photos at 10 Megapixels and 3648 x 2736 pixels resolution.

Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer informs us that the new card, like all other Panasonic SD and SDHC Memory Cards, is extremely reliable even under severe temperature conditions. Since the cards incorporate an industrial-grade flash memory, they work in temperatures ranging from -13 to +185 degrees Fahrenheit (that's -25 to 85 degrees Celsius), while consumer-grade flash memory only guarantees +32 to +158 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 70 degrees Celsius).

The new 32GB SDHC Memory Card complements Panasonic's Pro High Speed line-up and brings the total line to six models, joining those currently available: the 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB card sizes with the Class 6 speed specification. As mentioned earlier, the card is slated for an April global launch, and will sell for around 700 US dollars, which is a rather high price tag, especially since there are some other much cheaper 32 GB SDHC cards available on the market (albeit at lower data transfer rates, of just around 15 MB/s).
