Panasonic has just announced a new processor and memory update to its die-hard Toughbook 19 convertible tablet computer. The new generation of Toughbook 19F rugged tablet now comes with an Intel
Core 2 Duo processor and with expanded memory capabilities.

Mostly used in military, government and commercial applications, Panasonic's clamshell notebook comes packed in a magnesium alloy casing that allows the lightweight notebook to take up the most incredible shocks during field operation. The device is more than an office notebook: its sealed keyboard and ports allows the convertible tablet to work in extremely humid environments.

"Panasonic has always been at the forefront of engineering and building mobile solutions that incorporate enhancements in processing power while advancing durability, screen brightness, battery life and embedded wireless technologies," said Kyp Walls, director of product management, Panasonic Computer Solutions Company.

Under the magnesium-alloy casing, extreme notebook users can expect an 1.06GHz U7500 processor with 2MB of L2 cache, up to 4GB of SDRAM, and an 80GB shock-mounted hard-disk drive. Optionally, the notebook can be equipped with integrated WWAN, GPS and a 2-megapixel webcam for use in inspection and incident documentation applications.

Panasonic had to perform additional tweaks to the cooling system with the advent of the more powerful Core 2 Duo processor. The company also updated the heat-pipe technology in order to perform at optimal parameters without using an additional fan, as using active cooling would result in increased weight and power consumption and, at the same time, would maximize the risk of system failure in hards computing environments.

The system update brings not only performance, but also extra cash to the price tag. The Toughbook 19F rugged convertible is available now for an estimative retail price of $3,199. The integrated camera version will arrive later in May and is expected to feature a price tag of about $3,699.
