Pamela Anderson and other PETA activists are enjoying a new victory. It seems that Russia has decided to ban all seal fur imports, to make sure that its name won't be associated with cruel practices such as extended baby harp seal hunts. This is definitely bad news for Canada, since Russia has always been considered one of the most profitable markets for such high-class items,
PETA informs.
Now the country is at a turning point, because it appears determined to spare these vulnerable creatures.
The conservation goal has become noticeable since 2009, when Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin decided it was time to put an end to the barbaric seal slaughter.
At that point in time, he declared that those operations had generated profit for “bloody industry that should have been banned long ago.” His call was supported by Pamela Anderson, a worldwide known celebrity and a keen PETA activist.
She is now hoping that Canada would soon adopt the same path towards a cruelty-free fashion industry. Russia is definitely making progress, since it has followed the example set by other major powers, like the US, the EU and also Mexico, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Pamela Anderson and other PETA activists are joining efforts to protect the seal populations, a much-needed plan nowadays, when the Canadian government seems eager to fight the ban and exploit the considerable financial benefits obtained on the seal fur market.
Bloody seal hunts are still organized in four parts of the Globe: Canada ranking first when it comes to the number of such activities, followed by Namibia, the Danish region of Greenland and Norway.
In Canada, hunts are monitored and the seal population is closely supervised by The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
According to the data provided by DFO, Canada keeps making more and more victims. The country managed to kill 275,000 seals in 2008, 280,000 in 2009, and 330,000 last year.
