Palm Treo 800w, the handset that is supposed to bring Palm again on the top of the smartphone industry, will be delayed until the second half of 2008. Although, at the beginning of the year,
rumors said Treo 800w will come in April, Ed Colligan, Palm's CEO, recently declared that there will be no releases of "Windows Mobile Treos" in this quarter, and he was obviously referring to the long-awaited Treo.
Generally speaking, delays are not good for handset producers and nor for the consumers. But this particular delay is far more than "not good", as Palm is passing through one of the toughest periods in its history. Besides delaying the Treo 800w, Palm also reported, in a press release, a $31.5 million net loss. This comes despite the fact that one of the latest devices released by the company, namely Palm Centro, is a big commercial success, selling in almost 1 million units since its launching.
According to WMExperts, Palm's CEO said that Palm Treo 800w "will be the most competitive enterprise solution in the marketplace," which is great news for all Palm fans out there who have been waiting for a new smartphone capable of competing with the new generation devices from the other important manufacturers.
Treo 800w will have a small size, a nice design and also many cool specs, including Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Windows Mobile 6.0 (or even 6.1), a square 320 x 320 pixels display, a full QWERTY keypad for easy text input, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, USB, EV-DO Rev. A, a 2 Megapixel camera with video recording, 256 MB of built-in memory and microSD card slot.
Palm Treo 800w will probably hit the US market via Sprint for the beginning, at a retail price that has not been revealed yet. After that, the new smartphone should be available in Europe too.

| Comment #1 by: aka Hiro on 25 Mar 2008, 11:08 GMT | reply to this comment | ...maybe, just maybe, Palm finally got some well needed BRAINS & realized they can save a bundle (stockholders love that) while maximizing profits & cred by making the Treo800 a GPhone! Wishful thinking, I know, I know. But not an impossibility, RIGHT? What if? I hate Palm MGMT for the way they dragged their feet with features & screwed up things & I told myself I'm thru with Palm. But if they used Android instead of M$ AND I can use my old apps or convert them to Android... well, I guess I'll be a Palm-whore again... Oh, well... |
