Up to now, music mixing - whether in WAV or MP3 - in MIDI or other formats was a thing exclusively dedicated to large computers (be them desktops or laptops) or highly specialized digital audio workstations (in their console or computer versions).

Once with the development of more and more mobile/portable devices and their quick spreading among the users, it was almost clear that it wouldn't pass too much time until audio applications designed especially for them were developed.

Palm OS is the first computing environment to have its dedicated sound applications;
any handheld computer or even smart enough phone will thus be able to run a mixing/editing software, should need be. And so, miniMusic released the MixPad MIDI Player for Palm OS-driven gear. A rather simple yet new kind of software for the extending mobile world.

Previous attempts were made by several cellphone manufacturers and some lousy "DJ" applications are still to be found on some phones, yet the MixPad is the first very serious piece of code to hit the market. Still, don't you go that far as to think it's something like Reason or Audition: the MixPad is a rather simple application whose goal is to allow the user to play MIDI files/tracks in polyphony but also offer some control over it.

Basically, you can mute the tracks you don't need but also pan and adjust the volume for individual instruments comprised in a song. If you want to use a Palm OS device as an aid to your musical practice, the new software will help you do so: lust load the MIDI song, mute the parts you want to play for yourself and there you go: your own digital practice program (more or less like Guitar Pro for PC).

The miniMusic's Krikit Audio Engine (some sort of framework for the new applications) will run on Palm OS 5.0 and higher, and a pro version of the MixPad will be ready soon (later this spring), for those who want more from their handhelds and guess they could get used to working in a mini studio in their actual palm.

Early buyers can get a $10 discount (and have the MixPad for $19.95 instead of $29.95 - the usual price). Or you can decide to but the whole software bundle containing NotePad, BeatPad, AxisPad, and SoundPad (and of course - MixPad) for $89.95. Check their website for the demo version.
