According to a report from India’s Intelligence Bureau, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) penetrated the systems of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), the Indian state-owned telecommunications company based in New Delhi.

ISI used the access to BSNL’s systems to plant a piece of spyware, Live Mint reports.

India’s Home Ministry is concerned that the incident – which occurred in February 19, 2013 – could allow Pakistan’s intelligence service to “identify and access communications links of sensitive organizations.”

Apparently, ISI intelligence officers called up a BSNL executive from a spoofed landline and posed as a major from India’s Army. The Pakistani officer told the executive that the Indian Army was unable to access the subscriber base from BSNL’s website.

During an exchange of emails, ISI sent malicious links that allowed the agency to install malware on the telecoms company’s systems.

BSNL representatives haven’t confirmed the security breach.
