“Pacific Rim” is to 2013 what “The Dark Knight Rises” has been to 2012. Even so, Warner Bros. has managed to “strong-arm” director Guillermo del Toro into post-conversion of the film, Variety reports.

According to the movie publication, the decision was a corporate one: Warner could simply not resist the temptation of upping the film’s box office gross with premium ticket prices even though del Toro specifically said he didn’t want to post-convert the film.

Such a move can backfire and del Toro was aware of that.

“At Comic-Con in July, del Toro said he was resistant to converting the film to 3D because of the scale and size of the pic's creatures. The director has never released a 3D pic,” Variety says.

“Warner, which also will offer ‘Pacific Rim’ in 2D, expects to finish the pic's conversion in time for a mid-July release date,” the publication reports.

“Pacific Rim” is out on July 12, 2013.
