The handheld gaming market is a very tough one, as the two major competitors, Nintendo, with its DS and Sony, with its PlayStation Portable, are fighting for each and every customer. While Sony has the more powerful product, the wide variety of casual-oriented titles of the DS make it a more popular choice in territories such as North America or Europe.
This general decrease in sales and popularity for the
PSP has made a lot of industry analysts claim that a brand new revamp of the product, not another version, like the recent PSP-3000, which was launched in fall last year, will make an appearance soon. This was backed up by a lot of rumors concerning this presumed PSP2, the most recent one coming from IGN, which claimed that sources close to the Japanese company had disclosed that a
multi-touch interface, such as the one found in Apple's iPhone, would make an appearance in the future product, set to be announced quite soon.
But now, it is MCV's turn to cite sources close to Sony, which have revealed to them that all of the things reported by IGN are false, and that the presumed future product won't have anything like a touchscreen interface or any other feature. It isn't a complete denial of the fact that a successor to the PSP is being made though, but, the statement ends with the classic no comment.
“Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses. Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how ‘on the money’ IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense.”
So it seems that we can put the touchscreen rumors on hold for a while. Hopefully we will get to see an official announcement from Sony in the near future so that all of this speculation will end and that we might see what new features this successor to the PSP name will bring.
