Retailers threaten to drop the system from their stores if Sony doesn't drop the price

These days, Sony has a lot of pressure to deal with and some of the issues concern the price of their consoles. Both the PSP and the PS3 have big prices in comparison with what they have to offer. Well, mostly the PS3 but the PSP is right behind it. In an article of theirs posted on March 13, 1UP says that "a few big name retailers have given Sony a mandate: drop the price or they'll drop the system from their stores," in regards to the PSP.

The truth is that PSP sales are lagging since fall 2006, but the article didn't contain just this piece of information. Although it wasn't known for sure then, word was that Sony intended to change their handheld. Now we have confirmation from Sony that the PSP is indeed going to see some change and that an improved, lighter and possibly cheaper portable gaming device is going to be launched soon. They didn't specify any date however.

Now, could this be a response on Sony's behalf to the pricey PSP issue? We can't know for sure but, it wouldn't kill them to cut the price on that PSP a bit. Plus, with the new and improved PSP (or PSP 2, or whatever they're naming it) on the way, Sony wants to sell as many PSP systems as they can, before it's too late. Fans win either way, though: if the PSP gets a price cut, those who never got the chance to buy one will be very happy to get it cheaper now; if some are bored of their heavy PSP (though I doubt anyone's complaining) they'll probably get the chance to trade them in for the new ones, paying less in cash.

Oh, and if you thought that the lighter PSP that Sony is working on will have a screen size reduction as well, don't worry, that's not going to happen. They made sure that everyone heard them when they said they're going to improve it but keep that big screen just the way it is.
