PSP Outsells DS Due to Crisis Core's Launch

- “It's easy when you're big in Japan”

By: Alexandru Stanescu, Editor, Gaming Reviews (Consoles)

We're surprised to see that Sony's portable console has been quite prolific in Japan lately, but it seems obvious considering the huge fanbase of the Final Fantasy VII title and the fact that a new title has just
surfaced. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII sold rapidly, bundled pack and all aiding the PSP surpass the DS in the sales department, for the first time in Japan.

Sony should really thank the guys from Square-Enix for their PSP title, since it rocked the sales of their consoles and they should thank them twice for that "subtle" sentence at the end of the FF XIII TGS trailer. It basically announced the fact that the latest Final Fantasy game would only be available on the PS3, ignoring the rival platforms. This seems a weird call, mostly because the folks over at Square-Enix have been seen chatting with Microsoft's representatives and they even stated that they'll develop a title for the Xbox 360.

If Crisis Core was such a blockbuster in Japan, imagine the hysteria that would start at the moment of its European and American launch. That would equal another important percentage of the PSP's sales going up. Sony has yet another reason to predict great sales of its portable wonder, since Square-Enix have just introduced a PSP-only fresh new Kingdom Hearts title at TGS. For now, only a trailer is available, but the game looks promising and if it's half as good as Crisis Core, it will be a blockbuster.

The DS has had its share of Square-Enix games, so it's time for Nintendo to allow the competition to get some credit, as the Slim PSP is some neat piece of work. It may not have a touchscreen, or motion sensitivity (not officially), but it's still one of the best portable gaming devices to date, the best if you ask me.
