Maybe next year

Do you agree with Electronic Arts boss Larry Probts when he says that the PSP should be smaller and cheaper? I know I am.

In a Newsweek interview, Probst said that Sony should consider lowering the price of their handheld console, and that this console should be below US$ 100. He continued by saying that there is a big chance for us to see a below US$ 100 PSP next year. He concluded by saying that next year's PSP will come "with a different form factor"- a smaller version that is.

Probst explained that these statements are pure speculation, but continued saying that he would not be surprised if Sony cuts the price of the current PSP down to US$ 149, while offering "a more fully-featured upscale unit" for US$ 249 or US$ 299.

When asked if EA would develop the new IP for the PSP, Probst denied it by saying that EA is more likely to target other platforms like the PS3, Xbox 360 or even the Nintendo Wii. As regarding their PSP strategy, Probst explained that EA simply took games that were developed on other platforms and ported them to the PSP.

Even if PSP sales in North America went up by 280% over the Thanksgiving period, Nintendo is still the leader on the handled consoles market, given the fact that they have three main products: GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS and DS Lite. According to EuroGamer, the DS managed to outsell the PSP by a rate of more than 2.5 to 1 in the UK.
