The PlayStation Portable is a very successful handheld console, even though it didn't have a lot of support from game developers and only a handful of titles are really worth getting. But such a thing hasn't deterred a lot of people from buying it, as its multimedia capabilities made up for it.

When the PSP Go! was announced at E3, everyone expected it, thanks to a lot of leaks and rumors, but nothing certain was known about its hardware capabilities, other than the fact it would have a sliding mechanism, or about its software specifics, other than that it would rely on a digital download service.

Luckily, the European PlayStation blog has revealed a few details about the new portable from Sony, which will be released this fall. Tackling the subjects of battery life, accessory compatibility and a few other things, the statements from the blog are enough to quench the thirst of many gamers out there.

First of all, the new device will come with an embedded battery, which will be offering a charge equivalent with the current PSP. This translates into about three to six hours of gameplay and three to five hours of playing back video files on it. The removal of the UMD drive may have spared the battery of some heavy tasks, but the fact that it is smaller has made this advantage go to waste. Either way, the expectancy is pretty reasonable.

Also, older PSP owners won't have to keep the old cables and accessories, as the smaller form factors mean that it will rely on a smaller USB connection, making a lot of the older peripherals obsolete. Sony has revealed that an adapter might be released at the same time as the console, but nothing is certain.

The UMD solution we reported on a few days ago wasn't discussed, sadly, but there might be more details about it when the time is right and when Sony will have a definitive game plan set up. Until then, keep checking back for more details about the upcoming device.
