After years of speculation and rumors, the successor of the current PlayStation Portable, the PSP2 has officially been revealed to the world by Sony.

UPDATE: You can check out new, high resolution photos of the PSP 2 / Next Generation Portable as well as more details here.

The PSP2 was rumored for quite some time, with people talking about it even before the PSP Go appeared.

In recent months, however, things really started heating up, with presumed specs, features and photos slowly making their way out of Sony's secretive hands.

Now, the moment fans have been waiting for is finally here, with the company officially presenting the PlayStation Portable 2, or as it is calling it, the NGP (Next Generation Portable).

Many of the specs and features we already heard in previous rumors are now confirmed.

The PSP 2 has a 5-inch OLED touchscreen with a 960x544 resolution, a touch-sensitive back panel, a revised control interface, now with a second analog stick, thus making the controls just as the ones on the full pledged PlayStation 3.

The new device will also have tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls, front and back-facing cameras as well as support for WiFi networks, 3G mobile ones and GPS connectivity.

Check out the concrete specs below, courtesy of Kotaku:

CPU: ARM® Cortex™-A9 quadcore
RAM: SGX543MP4+
Display: 5 inches (16:9), 960 x 544, Approx. 16 million colors, OLED, Multi touch screen (capacitive type)
Wireless: WiFi, 3G, GPS
Inputs: Touchscreen, touch sensitive back panel, D-pad, L/R shoulder buttons, standard PlayStation buttons

Sony is boasting that the PSP 2, or NGP, is as powerful as a PlayStation 3, and has even confirmed some of the games that will appear on it.

These include blockbuster franchises like Uncharted, Killzone, WipeOut, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, as well as lesser known ones like Hustle Kings, Hot Shots Golf, Little Deviants and Gravity Daze.

We'll have more news about the new PSP in the following hours, as Sony's press conference is still underway at its Tokyo headquarters.

Anybody can tell me whether this comes with an UMD drive or not

As of right now, it seems that the PSP2 has not UMD drive, and will rely on digital downloads, like the PSP Go. Sony didn't reveal any details, however, so it's still up in the air.
