The PlayStation Portable 2, or the Next Generation Portable, as Sony is calling it, is finally here, and the company has just released the first batch of high resolution photos and a few more details about the new device.

The PSP2 was rumored for a very long time, with people speculating on it since before the PSP Go was even launched on the market, two years ago.

Now, the Next Generation Portable, Sony's own codename for the device, has been revealed to the world, after a few months of intense speculation, leaks and rumors.

This new PlayStation Portable console, we're still calling it the PSP2, will be a step forward for the device, especially in terms of hardware.

The company brought forth a wide array of third party developers, including Epic Games, which showcased its Unreal Engine 3 on the device, Hideo Kojima, who revealed a full cutscene from the PlayStation 3-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 on it, as well as Activision, who confirmed it would be bringing a Call of Duty game for the new device.

Its internal studios, including Naughty Dog or Guerrilla Games, as well as Insomniac, also confirmed that their franchises, Uncharted, Killzone and Resistance, respectively, would be coming to the PSP2.

Here are some of the key features of the NGP, as highlighted by Sony.

-Multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display
-Multi-touch pad on the rear of the device
-Dual analog sticks
-Two cameras (front and rear)
-Software titles on small, dedicated flash memory-based cards
-Three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass
-Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity
-PlayStation Network access, including ““LiveArea™”, “Near” and “Activity” log features Trophy Support
-NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store.

"When PSP first launched in 2005 in North America it changed the way people thought of portable gaming and raised expectations in regards to the variety and quality of games users expected to access while on the go," said Sony Computer Entertainment America President Jack Tretton.

"It has since become the go-to handheld entertainment system for more than 64 million users who seek home entertainment quality games along with access to their music, movies, photos and more."

"With NGP we carry on this rich history of redefining industry standards and raising the bar for consumer expectations for what portable gaming can deliver," he added.

The PSP2 is set to appear at the end of the year, just in time for the winter holiday season.

Until then, check out the high res pictures of Sony's Next Generation Portable below.

From Dvice site:
The NGP will have Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR and GPS built right in. Location-based apps and games will take advantage of the 3G and GPS to show what games are being played, purchased, etc. in any particular area.

3G connectivity wil be sold as separate unit.

Can you please confirm the GPS presence?
