Via PSM, the self proclaimed "only independent PSP magazine" out there, we learn of an alleged total makeover in the handheld's design. Sony is going to roll out a new PSP in Japan next spring as the latest issues headline on page 34: "The Next PSP Comes Together." Information was quickly absorbed by internet media but is generally regarded as an unfounded rumor.

Sony is still expected to include a camera (still/video) of undetermined resolution as a built-in feature of the new PSP. According to industry reports, the company reached an agreement with Samsung to purchase 8 GB flash memory chips which will be built in, presumably the same reports mentioned back in February. However, they don't imply the new PSP will have 8 GB of memory, only that such a move is likely. Miniature hard disk drives are out thus the PSP will be streamlined, thinner and lighter. The addition of two thumbsticks is also mentioned, but in a gossip listing of changes the PSM editors would like to see in PSP 2.

One must admit a two thumbstick handheld is a bit far fetched. Should this prove to be correct, it will heavily impact current PSP users in terms of console value and technology lifetime. Not to mention forcing developers to make games with two completely different control schemes: one and two thumbsticks. Rumors have been circulating for months now, and confirmation from PSM doesn't necessarily mean confirmation from Sony. The PSM article quotes "PSP developers who have been briefed on Sony's plans", implying that the handheld will have "a high degree of connectivity" with the PlayStation 3. It's not news however, as Sony publicly stated this on numerous occasions.
