The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation Network announces that the maintenance period for the service has been extended by two hours and is now expected to take a full seven hours and finish at 4:00 PM Pacific Time.

The company states via a Twitter message that, "Update: Today's scheduled network maintenance has been extended until approximately 4:00pm PT: http://bit.ly/IPj9jD."

Sony has not offered a reason for the extension but it might be linked to reports that some gamers are unable to play multiplayer matches on the PlayStation 4 and are informed that they do not have a PSN Plus subscription even if they paid for one.

The company says that it plans to offer more updates as the situation evolves.

Initially the maintenance period was set to expand the range of devices on which gamers were able to activate their content in order to encourage more sharing between the PS4 and the Vita handheld.
