Video games giant Sony has conducted its E3 press conference today and the company surprised some commenters by tackling the problem of the PlayStation Network hacking attack head on in an effort to make sure that gamers understand its response and how important security is for the company.

Jack Tretton, who is one of the most public figures at Sony, has told the assembled media that, “Nothing pleases the Internet like bad news. So, press outlets: you’re welcome.”

He added a simple yet clear apology, saying, “Without you, there is no PlayStation. I want to apologize personally and on behalf of the company.”

The executive then asked all those involved with the PlayStation 3 and the PSN to have faith in Sony as the company updates its security systems in order to cope with another attack and as it launches a number of initiatives that have been tailored to the needs to customers, rebuilding their faith in the services that Sony operates.

On April 20, the PSN was brought down because of an attack from a group of hackers that managed to get access to central servers and download the personal data of more than 77 million users, including a number of details linked to personal finances.

Sony initially mismanaged the crisis and refused to offer information about the attack in the first few days, only then choosing to communicate with gamers and tell them about the risks they were facing.

Before the E3 press conference from Sony, a number of analysts said that the company would focus on the launch of the upcoming Vita, ex NGP and PlayStation Portable 2, handheld and on the new projects linked to Move and PS3 three-dimensional gaming technologies.

Since the PSN attack Sony has also seen its music and pictures sites targeted by hackers and Nintendo was also recently affected.
