Sony has confirmed that it's sold over 6 million PS4 units worldwide as of March 2, after a really successful debut in Japan late last month.

Sony officially launched the PlayStation 4 on November 15 in North America and then rolled it out in certain European and PAL regions on November 29. After that, it slowly but surely released the console in various other countries from Asia, culminating with its native Japan on February 22.

Even from the start, Sony's PS4 experienced some great sales figures, reaching 4.2 million units sold by the end of 2013, and then confirming that at the beginning of February over 5 million consoles were bought by customers.

Now, after a pretty successful launch in its native Japan, Sony has confirmed that its PS4 has broken through another great threshold as over 6 million units have been sold worldwide, as of March 2.

A large increase in total sales was attributed to the Japanese release, as over 370,000 units were bought by customers in the land of the rising sun.

"I am absolutely delighted that PS4 is off to such a great start in Japan,” said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

"The responses we have received for the PS4 system’s integrated social capabilities have been phenomenal, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that gamers are utilizing these unique features to engage, share, play and connect with users around the world. SCE will continue to expand the world of PlayStation by growing its library of breakthrough games and bringing more innovative features and services only possible on PS4."

Sales figures for PS4 games are also really good, as Sony confirms that over 13.7 million titles have been sold through retail outlets and through its own digital PlayStation Store. Top sellers include Killzone: Shadow Fall, but also Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Battlefield 4. Indie titles like Contrast, Don't Starve, or Warframe were also highlighted by Sony.

This is phenomenal news for Sony, especially since Microsoft's Xbox One isn't doing so well, even though it has recently seen a price cut in the UK and will get a big exclusive, in the form of Titanfall.

As of right now, according to Sony, the PS4 is available for purchase in 57 countries worldwide. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Xbox One is still only available in 13 territories, although the company promised that it will debut it in more regions during 2014.
