The next-gen console from Sony is a huge success around the world

Sony has confirmed some brand new sales figures for the PlayStation 4 next-gen console, revealing that it has sold 5.3 million units worldwide as of February 8.

The PS4 was eagerly awaited by millions of gamers around the globe last year, and it slowly but surely began its launch in North America, continued to Europe, and it is now popping up in various other countries and territories.

The company has now confirmed a new set of sales figures for the PlayStation 4, revealing that over 5.3 million units have been sold to consumers worldwide as of February 8.

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," said Andrew House, PlayStation president and CEO, in a statement. "We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans."

The PS4 will launch in its native Japan on February 22, so expect these sales figures to grow even more.
