After a pretty lengthy time, Sony has finally delivered a Media Player application for its PlayStation 4 console, allowing owners to play all sorts of video formats that use codes such as MKV, AVI, MP4, MPEG-2 TS, but also photos and music files. These can be accessed via a USB stick or through DLNA.

The PlayStation 4 console was released by Sony back in November of 2013 all around the world, and since then, it’s broken sales records and received a variety of new features thanks to firmware updates and system software releases. Unfortunately, many long-awaited aspects are still missing-in-action.

The PS4 Media Player app is now available

However, during the Sony E3 2015 press event just a few hours ago, the Japanese company confirmed that one of the most desired features - the PS4 Media Player app - is now available as a free download for all owners of the console.

The new application allows PS4 users to play all sorts of video files, not to mention music and photos.

All you have to do is access the new Media Player icon from the PS4 menu and commence downloading the actual application from the PlayStation Store for free. Needless to say, an active Internet connection is require for such a thing.

Afterwards, you can start the app and select what files you want to play, either from a USB stick that's plugged into the PS4's ports or from a DLNA server in your proximity.

"The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4," Sony explains on the PS blog.

MKV, AVI, and many other file formats are supported

All sorts of file formats are supported by the PS4 Media Player. Video files such as MKV, AVI, MP4, or MPEG-2 TS can be played, while photos using JPEG, BMP, or PNG formats can be admired. Music playback supports MP3 and AAC (M4A) files.
