PS3 out Sold 1:7 by Nintendo's Wii in Japan

Now that Blu-ray diodes are getting cheaper to make, Sony should focus on cheapening their system

VGChartz shows that recent sales figures for the PS3 have again dropped.
Things are certainly looking as bad as possible for Sony. With the father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi stepping down, you'd think that it would be nice for the man to see some units of his last released console sold. But no, things don't go that way in real life (only movie dramas have that kind of happy ending) and the PS3 is doing worse than ever. VGChartz shows that since launch (November 11, 2006, in Japan) only 876,876 units have been sold, with a mere 10,819 units selling every other week.

There are two reasons for this:

1 - Sony has developed the most powerful gaming system ever created: the PlayStation3. Implemented with Blu-ray technology, the system's productions costs are rather high (or were until recently), bringing it to a total $600 worth of hardware at retailers. With gamers of all kinds out there, which don't always go for the fastest processing systems available, but also for the most fun and cheap, a console such as the PS3 has no chance with rivals like Nintendo's Wii or Microsoft Xbox 360 out there.

2 - Even though it's quite an expensive system, the PS3 is something that any console gamer would cut an arm or a leg for. BUT. Why on Earth would anyone buy a system so expensive, to only use it for the Folding@home application or the beta stage of the PlayStation Home service? With just a handful of titles released so far for the console, which quite frankly, aren't that spectacular either, Sony have their way cut out for them with their next-gen machine.

Now that Blu-ray diodes are getting cheaper to make and implement in the PS3, we may witness a cost reduction occurring with the system, but that's not bound to happen very soon, so the fact that Nintendo's Wii is currently outselling PS3 7:1 in Japan isn't that surprising really.
