PS3 and Windows Media Player 11 Media Sharing Tips

The PlayStation 3 is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. The system was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America and Asia, and March 23, 2007 in Europe and Oceania. It is the first console with next-gen primary storage media, Blu-ray Disc, though it also supports DVDs, CDs, and with some models SACDs. It is capable of playing back content from Blu-ray Disc (BD) at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps, the maximum bit rate defined in BD
I checked out the official PlayStation.com forums and I've seen some pretty useful info on how to allow media sharing between the PS3 and Windows Media Player 11, courtesy of Askanison01:
" Here is what I had to do with my set up. Some of this was necessary as my External Western Digital HDD is FAT32 at the moment, and without doing the below, the PS3 wouldn't see the content stored on my FAT32 drive. NTFS drives were fine, just not other HDD formats.
BASICS:
1. Ensure my firewall is set up properly. 2. Ensure my PS3 and Computer are within the same IP address range and subnet mask, so they can talk to one another. In other words allowing my computer and PS3, to obtain it's information from my DHCP (Firewall router). 3. Ensure any software firewall, has the necessary changes to allow Windows Media Player to communicate out for UuNP. If you use Windows Firewall and enable sharing for WMP, WMP will make the necessary changes to Windows Firewall. If you use another 3rd party Firewall, like I do, McAfee, you will probably need to go in to that software and add the right stuff, such as Programs that can communicate out on the network or trusted IP's, etc. (continues after the video)
A pretty useful video tutorial you'd surely want to check out as well (on the same topic):
On my PS3:
1. Disable Media Server Connection on the PS3.
On your PC, in Windows Media Player:
ENSURE YOU HAVE ALL THE NECCESARY PLUG-INS AND CODECS FOR WMP TO VIEW ALL TYPES OF MEDIA, LIKE AVI, QUICKTIME, ETC.
1. Install Windows Media Player (unless it's installed already). 2. In services.msc or "Computer Management", Change the account that Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service uses. Changed it to "Local System account", but leave "Allow service to interact with desktop" UNCHECKED. Restart this service. This was necessary to be able to add folders from my FAT32 External Western Digital HDD. 3. Click on Options 4. Click on Library 5. Click on Configure Sharing and then check mark "Share my media to: 6. Click on Settings 7. Put in something you want for share media as, and leave the default settings. 8. DO NOT click the "Allow new devices and computers automatically". Check marking this wil allow everything to connect without you knowing and approving. 9. Click on OK to get back to the main properties screen. 10. Click the "Monitor Folders" button. 11. Once that is up, depending upon how you have your computer set up, and how many user profiles you have choose your options. 12. For me, since all my media is in different places other than my profile in "Documents and Settings", I did an add and ADDED the folders I wanted to add to the library. 13. Let WMP build the library up, and let it completely finish. 14. Click OK on everything til you get back to WMP. 15. Verify your library.
On your PS3:
1. Enable Media Server Connection on the PS3.
On your PC:
1. Once you sit down, you might have a pop up, if you left WMP running, to allow an unknown device access. You can verify your PS3 by checking the MAC address. WMP does not support the PS3 yet, so it will be seen as an unknown device.
If NOT...... 1. Click on Options 2. Click on Library 3. Click on Configure Sharing and if things worked properly, you should see an "Unknown Device" Icon. 4. Highlight the Icon and do "allow", and do what ever else you feel necessary, such as customize, or right click the Icon for additional properties.
On your PS3:
2. Go to each Media choice in the XMB (Pictures, Music, Video), and under each do a "Search for a Media Server." 3. Once it has found a Media Server for each choice, you should then be able to see your PC show up with the funky "Windows ICON" and the name of the WMP share you created.
Should be able to take it from there.
I used the above steps, and my PS3 is now getting tons of content from my PC. With the exception of a few formats, such as AVI and Quicktime. Some of my choices above were to ensure that my computer is still locked down and secure. If you choose certain settings, you'll just open up your computer to vulnerabilities. "
Feel free to comment on this collection of tips, mentioning if they worked for you or if you've experienced issues.
After many hours of limited success I turned off wmp sharing, downloaded tversity, ran it and everything just worked. Highly recommend tversity (I did have a little win with wmp but tversity is so much faster I have found)

How are you receiving your internet? You have to connect to a router before any kind of modem wireless or not. I had the same problem with a wireless modem that I bought from my local Isp. I connected a linksys wireless router and it worked.
Out of all the pairing of the Ps3 & windows xp websites there are are this one truly helped me the most. thank you sincerely. You stopped 4-5 days of frustration and me possibly messing my PC up. Thought I was going to have to get media center in order to share it correctly...lol....I still get some protocol eras but you got it where both my PS3's are sharing all of my media...so thanx again, Derek.
Very helpful article thanks!! One quick tip: If your PS3 is not visible on your PC, it could be because of your firewall settings. Turn it off completely to see if that is the problem.. and make sure to turn it back on after it works..!

Did all this here but nothing changed. Even turned off my firewall to see if that was blocking the ps3. Nothing shows up on my laptop or my ps3.
I have a Dell inpiron 1520 with xp and I can easily share files with any other comps or apple macs, but my ps3 doesn't show up on any of those machines. I set up my ps3's wireless internet easily and got nat type 1 pretty easily too but setting up a network has taken alot of my time with no progress.
did everything mentioned above and my ps3 doesnt find media server, and i dont get an unknown device on media player. they just dont seem to communicate with each other. thought icecube was on to something but went through that and start up was already set to automatic. checked router settings and udnp is already enabled. someone please help, everyone i know set theres up no probs but ive had no joy at all
Same problem Neil. I've been all over my router and pc and tweaked everything. M nest step is to call Linksys and see if there's something going on with the comm. btw wired and wireless. I have upnp enabled, I even opened up the ports as documented in WMP11 (which the service should do anyway). The ONLY luck I had was my PS3 saw Azureus on one of my other computers, but that ps c is on a hard line not wireless. It doesnt have WMP11 either. I'm completely stumped as to why teh WMP11 service doesnt show up for the PS3, nor does my PS3 show up in WMP11.

Get an xbox, it does this without all the bs. I have both xbox360 and ps3. my ps3 only gets used to play dvd's.
I followed the tutorial and it worked great, turned my ps3 on today and it is not detecting any media server. The settings on my pc seem to be correct and wmp 11 is detecting an unknown device (my ps3, through a wired ethernet connection) but nothing on the ps3. TVersity works for gettings files across but I find TVersity to be prety poor as far as monitoring folders and keeping files up to date, also the reliability is poor as it stops running occasionaly. I know wmp 11 can work great as I was using it on my pc before I upgraded from xp 32 bit to xp 64 bit.
I have the same problem. followed tutorial but laptop running vista still cannot find my ps3. If i turn off my firewall, I will be unable to choose media sharing because it says it wont work without it on. but when i turn it on, it still wont find the damn thing. I do not have an antivirus program installed. File and media sharing is set to ON. Now why the hell is this not working?
I finally got wmp 11 and the ps3 to work together using the above. However and this is a big BUT not all formats work for music I have some mp3, wma that will not work on ps3 through wmp11 but work off a cd. Also if I convert mp3 to wma some of the files that would not play now work but not all? Any ideas?

Just make sure your Antivirus network firewall is turned off (leave the Windows firewall turned on). This is what causes the problem 99% of the time:)
If that doesn't work, don't know what to tell you. Sorry.

Thanks Shibbashabba! I turned off my AVG firewall and enabled windows firewall and instantly a box popped up simultaneously on my ps3 detecting my computer, and on my computer detecting my ps3. Thanks a lot, I tried every other suggestion above and this one worked for me :)

>I used the above steps, and my PS3 is now getting tons of content from my PC. With the exception of >a few formats, such as AVI and Quicktime.
Are you kidding me? Half of what I have are AVI's and I'm trying to figure out how to get them to show up in the WMP. Sure, I can use TVersity, but I also have DRM WMP files that I want to watch on the PS3. I don't want to have to run two different sharing programs, but maybe I'll end up having to.
Please edit the original post to mention that both WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) and UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) services need to be enabled, and an exception for Windows Media Network Sharing Service needs to be made in the Windows Firewall settings, even if Windows Firewall is disabled (it sets up UPnP for WMP - the exception is supposed to be added automatically by WMP).
I believe this should fix most people's problems of the PS3 not seeing WMP.
Advice for WMP not seeing the PS3 can be found in the first few posts of this page:

I have my ps3 finding my server and viewing some of my files but my other two newer playlist show as folders which is right but, shows that there isnt any information available inside them
Actually, I fixed it. Well, should say figured it out. You have to publish folders wanted to be displayed on the server as well as update these server. then the playstation will detect the media you are wanting to use. Email me if you have further questions

How do i keep an external hard drive monitored so they stay there, the internal with movies shows up fine but the external showed up one time all the movies are in my library but cant get them back to show up on the ps3.
I tried everything on here from disabling firewalls to going into service.mcs ( by the way thanks for that now neither the upnp or the wmi will start back up it keeps saying error 1079)
I have an issue guys. I'm running Windows 7 and WMP11. My PS3 finds my media server, however it does not find the files. It worked once for me before and I haven't changed anything. I'm under the proper Video column on the PS3 and my video library within WMP11 is stacked. I tried searching under "All Folders" or "All Videos" and nothing comes up. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I can see my media server through my PS3, and can watch movies I have taken on my iphone, but my can't see movies I have downloaded via bit torrent in my ps3. The videos are in my Media library and can be played on my PC. What am I missing?
The allow box doesn't light up for me to click on the unknown device even though the unknown device is right there in the share media to box. I don't get it!
