A brand new system software update for the PlayStation 3 console has just been released by Sony, taking the PS3's firmware up to version 4.70 and bringing support for Closed Captions when playing Blu-ray discs and DVDs, not to mention a new PlayStation Network logo.

The PS3 has been around for many years now and Sony's support for the console hasn't wavered in all this time, as new features and big games appeared for it from the Japanese company. Besides these big releases, the corporation also brought forth a lot of different firmware updates that were designed to improve the console but mostly to consolidate its stability and remove errors.

While Sony's main concern is with the PS4 right now, this doesn't mean that it's stopped deploying updates for the PS3.

System software update 4.70 is now available for download

The latest new firmware version has just been rolled out by Sony, in the form of update 4.70.

The new firmware apparently brings two new features to the console, starting with a fresh logo for the PSN option in the XMB interface. Instead of the old one, there's a new icon using the regular PlayStation logo but with a cyan background.

It's unclear just why this change took place as Sony hinted at no plans to rebrand the online service or at least do a makeover of its design.

The new firmware also brings forth support for closed captions when playing back movies found on blu-ray discs or regular DVDs. The option to display the closed captions is found in the Settings menu, under Video Settings and Closed Captions. You can also change the style used by the captions, from font type, size, or color from the same interface.

The new PS3 firmware update 4.70 is now available and will be automatically downloaded the next time you start up the console and are connected to the Internet.
